Spilsby’s annual Christmas Market and lights switch-on event has been cancelled due to poor weather, but a local Scouts group has stepped in to organise an impromptu indoor Christmas Fayre.
Gale-force gusts of up to 50mph and sleet are forecast for Saturday afternoon, which meant that Spilsby Town Council has chosen to cancel the outdoor event for safety reasons. The event usually attracts hundreds of people out into the town marking the start of the festive season with the usual Christmassy crafts, singing and entertainment for all the family – but the event was not held last year due to Covid-19 restrictions.
The decision was made at the Council meeting on Thursday evening with all members of the Council voting to cancel the event. As the event included the attendance of market stall holders as well as a road closure, which have to be planned months in advance, there was no opportunity to re-organise the event for a later date. The Council will be contacting all stallholders as soon as the office opens on Friday morning.
However, it is not all doom and gloom and the spirit of the season has been picked up by Spilsby Scouts Group who will now be holding an impromptu indoor Christmas Fayre at the Scouts Hut, off Pooles Lane in Spilsby. Tables will be available for £5 each.
The Scouts had spent time creating crafts and gifts to sell to raise money and did not want to see their efforts, and the efforts of other stallholders, go to waste.
